The local Seedsavers Group has an informal membership drawn from people living on the Strathbogie Tableland and in the Violet Town, Euroa, Benalla area who have a common interest in learning about and improving seeds for propagating food plants. More specifically, we aim:

*to develop a range of locally acclimatised, hardy and tasty vegetable varieties.  We do this by members trialling out different varieties and selecting those that do best in particular conditions.  For example, we particularly look for those that:

  • stand up to frost better,
  • handle adverse conditions such as less water,
  • are disease resistant,
  • are long, early or late producing,
  • are bolt resistant, and so on.

*to share knowledge and skills. This is also important, so days are held on such subjects as compost making, fruit tree pruning, grafting, propagation, seed saving/cleaning etc

*to organise work days whenever the need arises.

*to sell excess seeds at local markets to fund the group.

Each Wednesday Monika (our seed banker) holds open house at her Yea home for members who are able to come and help pack and label seeds.  Our excess seeds are sold at 3 monthly markets around the region for $1 a packet.  We find this a very satisfactory way of getting local seeds out to the wider community.  The money earned is used to buy books or other resources for the group and to make donations to various organisations, schools, charities etc .  We have donated seed to some fire affected gardeners.

Sandra runs the month to month organisation of the group and puts out a newsletter quarterly with details of meetings and full of information and hints on all aspects of gardening and seed saving.  She welcomes any info from members to be included in the newsletter.  Sandra 5795 1109.

We meet on the first Sunday of each month.
